The Houston Museum of Natural Science came alive with Champions of Literacy on May 15 when Literacy Advance honored Andrea White, Houston's First Lady, as our latest Champion of Literacy.

The event began in the Gem Hall, where Noble Energy welcomed Mayor Bill and Andrea White; Jonathan Sandys, Winston Churchill's great-grandson; and British Consul Paul Lynch. Andrea White was recognized for her most recent book Window Boy, a young adult novel that tells an inspiring story of a physically challenged ten-year old boy, Sam, and his friendly advisor, Winston "Winnie" Churchill, whose story is brought to life every day when Sam's British caretaker reads to him.

" When I speak to children around the country, they do not know who Sir Winston Churchill was, or the impact on the twentieth century that he had," stated Mr. Sandys. "When I speak of around the country, I mean Britain."

Using the IMAX Theater as a backdrop, emcee Khambrel Marshall of KPRC Local 2 moderated "The Churchill Legacy - A Conversation with Andrea White and Jonathan Sandys" and explored their mutual missions incorporating history into the lives of young people.

Mrs. White stated that she had always admired the contributions of Sir Winston Churchill, especially in light of the fact that he was such a poor student and really struggled in school. The Champions of Literacy Series is a multi-annual fundraising and public awareness series that promotes literacy awareness and volunteerism by acknowledging those who have made a difference in the Houston community.
