November 29, 2007
Literacy Advance celebrated Jana Mullins, Program Officer of Rockwell Fund, as its twelfth Champion of Literacy.
Ms. Mullins completed her book Open Hands: Lessons on Giving and Receiving upon graduating from the M.A. program in Spiritual Psychology at the University of Santa Monica in California. The book is a compilation of more than 45 stories from contributing writers, mostly from the Houston area.
Khambrel Marshall, KPRC Local 2 Executive Producer, served as the Master of Ceremonies. The presentation also featured a reading from the book by contributing writer Nancy Frees Fountain.
Testimonials by Literacy Advance volunteer tutor Jack Paige and his ABE learner Harrison related Harrison's recent successes of purchasing and reading his first book and 80% improvement on Literacy Advance assessment tests.
Harrison noted,
"Not knowing how to read and write is like going through life without a light. With the help of my tutor, I can come out of that tunnel with a smile on my heart. You are never too old to learn."
Thank you to our Champions of Literacy Series sponsor Lyondell Chemical Company and our Event Patrons Houston Business Journal, E2 Specialty, Nancy and Tex Fountain, Herb & Mary Jo Loyd and Gene Graham, and Universal Weather and Aviation.
